The next step is to divide your pillows into 2 groups.
On your piece of paper, write down the following 2 groups:
Group 1: "SIGNATURE" Pillow Group
Group 2: "SUPPORTER" Pillows Group
What is the "Signature" Pillow Group?
These are your statement pieces—the pillows that will draw the eye and establish your coastal theme most clearly.
This group will contain the most decorative pattern/s. It will essentially contain your "Signature" pillow/s (also known as your "Hero") i.e. the pillow/s that capture the most attention and play the lead role in your coastal pillow styling story. By the end of this pillow styling process your "Signature Pillows"group will contain:
For Formal: 1 to 2 pillows with same decorative pattern (from same Coastal Style).
For Casual: 1 to 2 pillows with different decorative patterns (from same Coastal Style).
What is the "Supporter" Pillows Group?
These complement your signature pillows, providing balance, depth, and cohesion to your arrangement without competing for attention. Think of these as the dependable co-stars, and thus are less decorative than your Signature PIllows.
By the end of this pillow styling process your "Supporter Pillows Group" will contain:
For Formal: 1 pair of pillows of same pattern and color - or - 2 pairs of different pattern and color pillows (example below)

6 COASTAL PATTERN STYLES
1. Minimalist Coastal - Most Subtle Coastal Reference.
This is the most minimalist of all coastal styles and it predominantly are blocks of color - i.e. uses the color as its most decorative coastal statement of its pillows. A subtle texture (e.g. linen texture) can be used for adding more interest. This is the most serene of all coastal sub-styles.
2. Modern Coastal - Subtle Coastal Reference.

Instead, it is only after you this step that you then progress to choosing the style/s of your "Supporter Pillows Group", then your Color Palette, that you start filtering down to specific coastal pillow designs.

When choosing your signature pattern style, think about the overall "strength" of the coastal reference you want.
Note: Coastal patterns aren't one-size-fits-all; they range from subtle whispers to bold statements.

The key is it has to have the same amount or less coastal reference to that of your Signature Pillow Group.
TIP: Think about the overall - combined - "strength" of the coastal reference you want from your entire pillow combination, PLUS how much of a relaxing, serene essence you desire for your living room space - the closer your Supporter style/s get to the "Minimalist Coastal" style side of the spectrum the more serene, relaxing energy you add to your pillow combination.

choose 1 - 3 that you would love as the SUPPORTING pattern styles in your throw pillow combination.
First choose your most decorative Supporter Pattern Style/s. Primary Color/s: the 1 or 2 dominant hues (wall color, rug, sofa) - whites, greys &/or neutrals (sandy beige etc.)
Secondary Colors: next most common colors in room (curtains, art, and furniture),
Accent Colors: Lesser used colors that stand out around the room (decor, plants, artwork).
Your goal is to create a cohesive look by choosing 2–4 main colors for your pillows that echo your room's harmony and contrast. Limit your palette to maintain a tranquil, coastal vibe—think soothing blues, natural whites, sandy beiges, and the occasional pop of coastal green or coral.
In the room below the Primary color is white, the secondary color is blue, and the Accent color is a sandy tan brown
